The six answers, the name, and what the box looks like

Chapter 4 · In progress

Module 20’s six answers, the name and its trademark status, the visual identity on one spread, and the packaging. Guide: the full plan §4.

Draft

The six answers. Each one is under 60 words.

  1. Who it’s for. Fashion people around 18 who buy from young designers on Instagram, for an everyday fit and for going out.
  2. What they do instead. Buy from other young Instagram brands, and save up for, or wish for, the luxury references: the Orbit, the America’s Cup, the Chanel runner.
  3. What we believe that the category doesn’t. Something arguable. If nobody could disagree with it, it’s a platitude, not a belief.
  4. What we offer. The shoe, the price, and the thing beyond the shoe.
  5. Why anyone should believe us. An 18-year-old founder, from the same community as the customer, building an underground brand in the open. The proof: the factory named, the samples shown, the process documented.
  6. What we’ll never do. Three exclusions. For example: no public markdowns, no custom tooling before a silhouette has proven it sells, no “limited” drops that aren’t limited.

Name. Sartro (working name). Trademark: not filed. Domain: not secured. Handles: not secured.

Identity. Wordmark, colours, typeface, photography style. One spread in the finished plan.

Packaging. A plain kraft box with one-colour print, tissue, and a card that tells the shoe’s story. Nothing printed before the trademark is filed.

Questions for you

  1. Is Sartro free? Have you checked the USPTO register (class 25), the domain and the Instagram handle? Anything that could make you change it is cheaper to find now than after the boxes are printed.
  2. What do you believe about shoes that most brands don’t? Write it the way you’d say it in an argument.
  3. What will you never do? Name two or three things.
  4. How visible will you be? “An 18-year-old’s underground brand” is part of the pitch. Will your face and story be on the account, or will the story be told without showing you?
  5. Do you already have a logo, colours, or a mood board?
