Objective
Produce the drawings a factory actually works from: accurate lateral/medial line drawings on a last profile, full orthographic sets, colourways, and callouts — at a standard where a pattern engineer can quote and pattern from them without asking you basic questions.
Why it matters commercially
Ambiguity in a drawing becomes a guess in the factory, and a guess becomes a sample round. Each sample round is 3–5 weeks and $200–600. Drawing precisely is worth roughly a month of your calendar.
Core concepts
The last profile is your ground truth
Every footwear line drawing starts from an accurate last profile — the traced side view of your actual last, at 1:1 scale. Not a generic sneaker template from the internet. Yours, from Module 3.
Build a reusable Illustrator/Affinity file containing, on locked layers:
- Last profile, lateral and medial, at 1:1
- Bottom (featherline) outline
- The sole unit’s outline overlaid, at its correct height — giving you your bite line
- Centre line, ball line, heel-to-ball line, topline reference height
- A millimetre scale bar
Every design gets drawn on top of this. Now your drawings are dimensionally true, which is what makes them quotable.
The required drawing set

Draw in flat vector line art with clear line weights — heavy outline, medium panel breaks, light stitch lines. Colour fills separately from linework, on their own layer, so a colourway is a five-minute job.
Stitch lines, and the convention that matters
Represent stitching as a dashed line, and label rows and SPI. Represent a panel edge as a solid line. Beginners conflate them and the factory cannot tell where a seam is versus where a printed graphic is.
Dimensioning
Dimension anything you actually care about, in millimetres, from a stated datum:
- Topline height at centre-back and at the throat
- Eyelet count, spacing, and distance from the throat edge
- Panel break positions along the length
- Logo size and its position from two datums (e.g. 42mm from the backstay, 26mm above the bite line)
- Tongue length and width
- Any radius you care about
If you don’t dimension it, the factory will choose. Sometimes that’s fine — say so explicitly (“factory standard”) rather than leaving silence.
2D or 3D?
You do not need 3D for your first shoe. Factories pattern from good 2D tech packs constantly. Learn 3D when one of these becomes true:
- You are iterating so many silhouettes that physical/2D iteration is the bottleneck
- You need photoreal renders for pre-orders before samples exist (a genuine use case — see Module 19)
- You are moving to custom tooling, where 3D midsole surfacing genuinely saves mold trials
When that time comes, the realistic options: Blender (free, general, capable, steep), Rhino (~$995, precise surfacing, industry-adjacent), Modo (footwear design has a real presence here), Clo3D/Style3D (soft goods simulation, more apparel), and true footwear pattern CAD like Shoemaster, Romans CAD or ICad3D+ (expensive, and mostly for pattern engineers, not designers). Start with Blender if curiosity strikes; don’t let it eat Week 8.
Do this
1 · Build the master template (5h). The layered Illustrator/Affinity file described above, from your real last and your shortlisted sole. This file is an asset you will use for years.
2 · Draw the chosen design, all views (10h). Lateral, medial, top, bottom, front, back. Correct line weights, dashed stitch lines, on-template so it’s dimensionally true.
3 · Dimension it (4h). Every dimension listed above. Then hand the drawing to a friend and ask them to describe the shoe back to you. Every question they ask is a missing dimension.
4 · Exploded view (3h). Draw the shoe’s layers pulled apart — outer, reinforcements, foams, linings, sockliner, board, midsole, outsole. This is your Module 2 understanding proving itself, and factories genuinely appreciate it.
5 · Two colourways (2h). On the colour layer only. If it takes more than 20 minutes each, your file is badly organised — fix the file.
6 · Outreach block (1h).
Deliverable. A complete drawing set: six orthographic views, fully dimensioned, plus exploded view, plus two colourway sheets, as a single organised vector file and an exported PDF.

Traps
Downloading a generic sneaker template. Its proportions are not your last’s proportions, and everything you draw on it will be subtly wrong in a way that only surfaces on the first sample.
Beautiful renders, absent specs. A gorgeous render with no dimensions is worse than an ugly line drawing with complete ones. The factory works from the second.
Forgetting the lasting margin. Again. Panels that reach the bottom continue ~15mm below the bite line. Show it, hatched, on your drawing so nobody is confused.
